Chapter One
“Hey Anne, another round!” – Jeff yelled at her as he was watching the game and cheering with his friends. The whole sheriff’s department was here, as usual, cheering their hero. Everyone in town knew who Max Weber is. How could you not? This town was his home town and his name was legendary around here. Every single person in town was so proud of Max Weber. All of them behaved as if they were somehow personally responsible for his success. They even did the billboard thing at the entrance of the town that said: “Max Weber’s home!”
“Nothing like a couple of beers after a boring day of work.” –Jeff thought to himself, still strangely content that nothing much happened in this town. After all, it was a blessing to be the sheriff when you don’t have major problems.
“Coming right up, Jeff!” – Mandy yelled back, going to the bar and pouring another pitcher of beer. She was tired, she smelled of beer and grilled meat and was ready to go home. “God, I need a shower.” – She thought, exhaling loudly and taking the tray to their table.
The diner Anne worked in was tiny, it was your typical small town eatery. Everyone in town spoke badly of the place, the hygiene, the food but at the end, everyone came here. Simply because, there was really nowhere else to go. The place was on the main road and close to everything, so almost all of the townspeople dropped by at least once per day. And working here, meant hearing everything about everyone else, as people loved gossip. Mandy was working there for the last three years and she knew all the regulars and their favorites. Half the time, the job was a breeze. Being paid minimal wage was beyond horrible, however having a small child at home was even scarier. After her high school years, Mandy had spent a lot of time being afraid. Mostly, of the future.
“Here you go boys. Enjoy.” – Anne learned how to sound confidant so the customers don’t think they can get away with anything. No one of them knew how much she hated the job or the fact that she was stuck in there this late, while her baby girl was at home. She had to do it, for Grace.
“Hey Mandy, you remember Max Weber right? I mean, you guys used to hang out in high school, right? Tell us about him.” – One of Jeff’s buddies asked.
She smiled, completely used to these same questions, always giving the same practiced answer. It was like a game to her, something she didn’t even have to think about, a reflex of sorts: “You know, Andy, we’ve talked about this a million times. I was friends with Max’s sister in high school. Didn’t know him that much.”
“How does it feel to know someone that has reached for the stars?” – Jeff asked.
Anne looked at him and kept quiet for a while. She was happy for Max, she really was. She just wasn’t too happy about herself. All her dreams of becoming a singer fell apart as if they were made of soap bubbles. Back in the day, Max was going to be a big MLB star and she was going to be a famous singer. Look how that ended.
She looked at Jeff and smiled politely: “It feels good Jeff. It really does. Now if you boys can excuse me, I have to go home.”
“Say hi to Grace for us!”
“Thanks Jeff.”
She left the diner and walked down the alley. It was almost midnight and it was chilly out there. Mandy picked up her pace, waiting to get into the tiny apartment and see her Grace. She only had about five hours to rest before she had to get up and go to work. Being a single mom in a small town was hard enough as it was, without the two jobs she was keeping. She had to, for Grace. As she was walking, she thought about the past, about the last time she was actually carefree, and she smiled.
“I guess everyone deserves the high school days. Simply because those are the days that will make you smile in the long run.” – She though.
She was going to be a singer. She was admitted to one of the best music schools in the country. She was ready to shine, she was ready to be famous. Until one day, all her dreams came stumbling on her. She exhaled as she thought about it. Back then, she was angry, disappointed even mad at the creature that was growing inside her.
Remembering the disappointment she saw in her parent’s eyes when she told them, hurt to this day.
“They tried so hard to make me successful.” – She thought as she remembered she hadn’t talked to them in over 3 years. “I crushed their dreams too.”
As she was walking home, her phone vibrated. “Who could possibly be texting me this time of night?” – She thought, as she took her phone out.
A text message from Sophie. Damn it. Anne has done all that she possibly could to stay away from her. Sophie had a very different life than she has, Sophie was Max’s sister, Anne’s best friend from high school.
“I just don’t have the time for you know.” – Anne thought, opening the text message. She read it and stopped. Then she read it again. And again.
“I’ll be home this weekend for the wedding. I want you by my side. XO, Sophie.”
Anne exhaled deeply. All the Webers are certainly coming home this weekend. There was no more ignoring them.
She put the phone back in her pocket and picked up the pace to go home, after all she was paying the sitter per hour.
Anne walked in her small apartment. Seeing Grace put a big smile on her face.
“Mommy’s home baby.” – She said, hugging her dearly.
“Hi Anne, we were just going to make dinner…”
“No worries Stacey, I got it. Was everything all right?”
“Of course. Grace is a little angel” – The sitter exclaimed, bringing more warmth around Anne’s heart.
“Thanks so much Stacey. See you tomorrow.”
As the babysitter left, Anne took Grace by her little hand and led her to the kitchen. Grace was almost asleep but she still waited for her mommy to come back home first.
“So, baby what are we going to have for dinner?”
“Cookies.”
“Cookies it is.”
After they had cookies and milk, Anne took Grace to bed. As she kissed her forehead, she remembered the text she got earlier. She went back to the living room and dug up a photo album from what seemed to be a completely different life.
Anne looked through the photos from her high school days. Sophie was with her on every single photo, they really were best friends. And then, there was him: Max, Sophie’s brother.
> Just looking at that photo with the three of them together brought back more memories than she could possibly take. The nostalgic emotions fed her with dread by the realization that her best friend was not aware of Grace, her daughter. She shut the album and left it on the table.
“There will be a lot of questions.” – She concluded, slowly getting up and going to the shower.
Chapter Two
“Another great game Max” – His coach congratulated him as he was getting ready to get the hell out of there. Max smiled vaguely: “Thanks coach. See you in a couple of weeks.”
“Couple of weeks? What about the game next weekend?”
“It was already discussed, Coach. I’m going back to my hometown. My little sister is getting married.”
“Oh right, that. Well, have fun.”
As the coach left, Max sat down in the locker room. There was something oddly nostalgic about going back to that crappy little town. He did have fun in high school, but he has seen and done so many things since than that he felt as if he goes back, the tiny town will suffocate him.
“Well at least I will see Anne there.” – He smiled. Anne was the only memory that actually made him feel good about going home. After all, she was the only one he had felt something for. Max knew it was probably because they were only teenagers then and they were inexperienced back then, but still he treasured every memory he had with her.
“Baby are you ready?” – Natasha walked in the locker room. Tall, drop-dead gorgeous, blonde, terrific ass. Everything one would hope for she had.
“Yes, Natasha, let's go.”
As he was driving back to the hotel, she slipped her hand in between his legs: “Great game baby. It made me so wet.” – She whispered, as she went down on him.
“God damn it. I love my life” – He thought, as she took his cock into her mouth and sucked him right then and there.
Natasha was something of a groupie. It was clearly discussed that they were not exclusive, she just had a major turn on for successful guys. Who doesn’t?
She was also a great fuck. An incredibly great fuck.
It would be exaggerating to say they have been seeing each other. More correctly, they have been fucking for almost three months now. As much as she was fun, Max was getting somewhat tired of spending the nights with someone he really didn’t care about. Plus, he always had his parents on his shoulder asking when he is going to get married.
It wasn’t as if he hasn’t thought of it before. He has. And he wanted to find a normal wife and have children. But, in between his busy career and girl like Natasha, he really didn’t have the time to look for the right one. The right now was good enough for him, until that night.
“God, Sophie is getting married. And to a good guy too. I am happy for her, but I can’t help but think will I ever find the right one?” – Max thought as he was pulling in front of the hotel.
“Why didn’t you cum baby?” – Natasha asked and brought him back to reality.
“Sorry Natasha, still wired up about the game.”
“No worries Max. We’ll continue upstairs.” – She whispered, getting out of the car and walking up to his room.
As much as he really didn’t feel like having sex tonight, he kind of had to. Simply because Natasha was the type of girl that kissed and told, which meant if he didn’t fuck her tonight, she will tell everyone on her team. If the coach heard, it would be considered as weakness.
It was a man’s world after all.
“You gotta do what you gotta do.” – Max though as he got out of the car.
Chapter Three
Anne had to get up at 5am, get ready and go to work. She had to keep two jobs now and as much as she knew everything she was doing was for Grace, she couldn’t help but feel guilty for not spending more time with her daughter.
She worked shifts in the small diner and early in the morning she went to the local factory where she was packaging pastries. It was a dull and automatic job but someone still had to do it.
Grace was asleep as Stacey the babysitter arrived and Anne was ready to leave.
“Thanks Stacey for coming over so early.”
“No problem, Anne, it really is a pleasure. Oh, I just saw a big, shiny car drive towards the Weber house. Are they in town?”
Anne froze. Sophie was already here. What is she going to tell her?
“Sophie is getting married. This weekend.” – Anne said and left the apartment.
As she was waiting for the bus to take her to the factory, she recalled their high school days, the days when she was an aspiring singer, the days when she actually had potential to do something in her life. It just got harder and harder to think about it.
The bus arrived and she got in trying to refrain from thinking about the past.
“It really is hard not to when the past haunts you in your present.” – She thought.
The shift was grueling. It seemed as all the work from the whole week got dumped on her that same day. She was sweaty and smelly when she finally got out. Not to mention dead tired.
As she left the factory, she saw a big, black shiny car parked out front. As she was passing by it, she heard a very familiar voice:
“AnneAnne it's me, SophieThey told me I can find you here”
“Oh shit.” – Anne though, as she turned around to face Sophie.
As always, Sophie was gorgeous. Wearing a beautiful expensive dress and classy shoes, she didn’t look a day older then what Anne remembered her.
“Sophie It is good to see you.” – Anne lied, feeling completely aware of herself. Her dirty clothes, smelly hair, no makeup, exhausted face… She bet she looked like a 50-year-old woman. For a second there, she was sure she saw pity in Sophie’s eyes. That was what she was terrified of.
“You look…good.” – Sophie said, eyeing her head to bottom: “Anyway, I am here along with Paul, my fiancé who you HAVE to meet. Let’s have lunch now? I want you to be my maid of honor, Anne.”
Anne looked at her totally surprised: “Me? Are you sure? I mean… I don’t know…”
“I’m not accepting no for an answer. You have been my only real, best friend for years. And, despite what happens in life, you will always be.”
Anne felt tears coming to her eyes: “I’m sorry I’ve ignored you Sophie. It's just that… Life for me didn’t turn out as I expected it to…”
Sophie jumped in and hugged her: “I know Anne. And I don’t care. I will always be here for you. Always. That’s what friends are for.”
Anne hugged her back and cried for the first time in a long while. God, it felt good to have your friend close to you.
“Of course I will be your maid of honor.” – She laughed, wiping off the tears: “Nothing would make me happier.”
Sophie smiled: “Good. It's not like you had a choice, anyway. So, I heard you have a daughter?”
“Yes, I do. Grace. She is amazing.”
“I bet she is. Let’s go get her and we can all have lunch together.”
Anne nodded: “Yes, sounds great. Let’s go.”
They got into the car together and kept on talking about everything. It was good to see Sophie again. Anne finally felt like she wasn’t alone.
Chapter Four
The next morning, Max woke up feeling somewhat excited. It was time to go back home. As much as Natasha had insinuated she wanted to go, he had to completely discourage her: “This is a family affair, Natasha. Plus, we are not exclusive or anything.”
After he said that, she got really fucking mad and left.
“Maybe it was a good thing” – He thought as he already was looking for a way to tell her he really didn’t want to see her again.
He got up went to the shower, packed a bag and left. “Maybe I’ll see Anne again.” – He thought as he was entering his car.
It was about a three-hour drive from the big city to the small town he grew up in. Three measly hours made all the difference in the world, though.

p; He knew everyone will want to talk to him once he got there. After all, he kind of was his hero.
“As long as I see her.” – He was thinking when he caught himself. Why did he want to see Ann so bad? They haven’t seen each other since… Well, since forever. He felt as if he knew her in another life. Maybe she was married maybe she wasn’t even in the town. “I’ll just have to get there and see for myself.” – He thought.
* * *
Back in the small town, Sophie was in Anne’s small apartment, waiting for her to get ready. Anne saw Sophie was sitting uncomfortable, clearly surprised that her friend was doing this bad for herself. Anne brought Grace to the room: “Grace, meet Sophie. Mammy’s friend.”
“Hi Sophie. You are pretty.” – Grace said.
Sophie started laughing: “Well thank you baby. So are you. How old are you?”
“I’m three.” – Grace smiled.
Sophie looked from Grace to Anne and then to Grace again: “Get ready Grace. We are going out.”
Grace ran to her room as Sophie was looking at Anne: “Hey where’s the husband?”
“There’s no husband.”
“So who’s is she? Mike’s?”
Mike was a guy Anne was seeing back in high school. They were together for the full four years until she broke up with him.
Anne smiled: “Let's go Sophie. I want to meet this Paul guy.” Sophie smiled.
They left the apartment and drove towards the Webster’s home. Their home was the biggest estate in town. Sophie’s parents still LIVED there and thanks to their son, they didn’t have to work a day in their lives anymore.
All three of them walk into the big house. Anne is taken aback by the luxury around her. Max has obviously been doing a lot better than she thought and she can’t help but feel embarrassed by her own failure.
“Anne dear, so good to see you.” – Sophie’s mom shows up, hugging her.
